What is the history of Frýdek-Místek?
Frýdek and Místek grew as rival towns across a river. On the Moravian bank stood Místek and on the Silesian bank Frýdek, two market towns divided by the Ostravice and long ruled by different lords, that faced each other across the water for centuries. Cloth made them both rich.
In the age of machines the towns filled with weaving mills and spinning works, and grew into a busy centre of textiles some called a Moravian Manchester. Faith drew pilgrims to the Frýdek hill. Above Frýdek the great Marian basilica became a place of pilgrimage, and its twin-towered church and castle crowned the town.
In the last century the two towns became one. Under a single name Frýdek-Místek joined the rival banks into a single city of the Beskydy foothills, keeping its mills, its churches, and its Lachian songs. The old basilica still draws its pilgrims.
