Where to stay in Grünwinkel
Where visitors usually base themselves, and why.
Grünwinkel is mixed ground, generous housing along the Alb on one side and wide commercial estates along the Maxaubahn and the Südtangente on the other. The Hardecksiedlung and Heidenstücker are its residential quarters. Karlsruhe West station puts the district on the railway, and disused industrial buildings have been taken over for leisure, among them the climbing hall called The Rock.
About Grünwinkel
What are the main landmarks in Grünwinkel?
The Albkapelle is the district's small landmark, and the Briefzentrum Karlsruhe is its large one, the sorting centre known as Briefzentrum 76, working since the twenty-second of November 1996 and handling millions of items a day. Industry supplies the rest. The Hatz-Moninger brewery stands here, as does the Karlsruhe site of the fire-equipment maker Rosenbauer.
What is the history of Grünwinkel?
A Roman vicus stood on this ground, and between 1922 and 1927 three brick kilns and a potter's kiln were uncovered at its edge, worked from the end of the first century to the end of the second. The medieval record begins in the fifteenth century, when the place was called Krähwinkel. The village proper was founded in 1710 around a customs post, and Karlsruhe took it in as a district in 1909.
Where is Grünwinkel?
Grünwinkel lies south-west of the centre of Karlsruhe, strung along the Alb with the Maxaubahn and the Südtangente cutting through its commercial ground. Housing sits between them. The Hardecksiedlung and the Heidenstücker are the two named estates, and Karlsruhe West on the Winden railway is the district's own station.
