About Sandhofen

Where to stay in Sandhofen
Each area has its own feel; here's who each one suits.
Beds in Sandhofen sit north of the Mannheim core, closer to Coleman Barracks than to the city's shopping streets. The Jakobuskirche and the Dreifaltigkeitskirche give the older lanes their two fixed points, and a stay near either one puts the Heimatmuseum Mannheim-Sandhofen and the KZ-Gedenkstätte Sandhofen within an easy local walk. Distances stay modest.
Farther out, Coleman Airfield and its barracks mark the borough's working edge, and the Zeitgeschichtliches Museum Mannheim rounds out what there is to see.
About Sandhofen
What are the main landmarks in Sandhofen?
Two churches fix the older centre. The Dreifaltigkeitskirche and the Jakobuskirche stand within the built-up part of Sandhofen, while the Heimatmuseum Mannheim-Sandhofen keeps the borough's own record in a smaller house. The Zeitgeschichtliches Museum Mannheim covers the twentieth century, and the KZ-Gedenkstätte Sandhofen marks a memorial site that the borough's name carries.
Coleman Barracks and Coleman Airfield give the place its other, military face.
What is the history of Sandhofen?
Sandhofen's twentieth century is written into two places. The KZ-Gedenkstätte Sandhofen holds the memory of the concentration camp its name records, and the Zeitgeschichtliches Museum Mannheim gathers the wider account of those years for the city as a whole. Coleman Barracks came later.
For a time the United States Army carried out all of its European and Middle Eastern helicopter maintenance at Coleman Airfield, and the site held the army's only military prison in Europe.
Where is Sandhofen?
Sandhofen spreads across roughly 26.7 square kilometres at the northern end of Mannheim, in Baden-Württemberg.
