A failed farm gave the name. The Waldhof was founded early in the 19th century and disappeared from the map quickly because the ground was infertile, and its name was picked up by the Spiegelmanufaktur Waldhof that Saint-Gobain founded in 1853. Housing came with the works.
The company laid out the Spiegelkolonie beside the factory, one of the oldest workers' housing estates in Germany. Luzenberg joined the city first. Hutzelberg, also known as Luzenberg, sits on the Käfertal Gemarkung and was incorporated into Mannheim in 1882.
Pulp came next. The Zellstofffabrik Waldhof was founded in 1885, and rapid population growth followed the advancing industry. The city took it in 1897.
Waldhof came to Mannheim in that year together with its mother commune Käfertal.
