This is a planned estate and nothing older. Vogelstang was laid out in the 1960s to answer a housing shortage, so the whole of it dates from one project rather than from a village that grew, and the fabric reads accordingly. A lake sits on the southern edge.
A former gravel pit there serves as local recreation ground, and the Viernheimer Kreuz and the town of Viernheim with the Rhein-Neckar-Zentrum lie off to the northeast. Käfertal is west and Wallstadt east.

What are the main landmarks in Vogelstang?
A river once ran where the lakes are. A meander of the Neckar looped south of the present housing, about at the level of the lakes, ten thousand years ago. The ground was farmed until the estate.
Most of it belonged to Wallstadt before incorporation and a smaller part to Käfertal, it was worked mainly by Käfertal farmers, and they grew asparagus and tobacco on it to the end. A small settlement came first. Building began in 1928 on the Auf der Vogelstang and Eberswalder Weg streets in what is now the northwest of the Stadtteil, and by 1940 it ran to about forty houses.
What is the history of Vogelstang?
Frankish graves turned up in the 19th century. More than five thousand finds from every period since the old Stone Age were recovered later, during the building of the Vogelstang estate itself. A small settlement preceded it.
Houses went up from 1928 along Auf der Vogelstang and the Eberswalder Weg in the northwest corner, and by 1940 there were about forty of them. Housing shortage drove the rest. The city administration began considering a new Stadtteil in 1959, and Mannheim's first mayor Ludwig Ratzel was closely involved in planning and building it.
One company carried most of it. GEWOG, a subsidiary of Neue Heimat, put up the greater part of the project. The name was already on the ground.
Vogelstang was taken from an old Gewann or field name recorded there before any of this was built.
Where is Vogelstang?
Vogelstang lies in the eastern part of Mannheim between Käfertal to the west and Wallstadt to the east, with a former gravel lake on its southern side and the Viernheimer Kreuz to the northeast.
