About Barmbek-Nord
What are the main landmarks in Barmbek-Nord?
Barmbek-Nord's first parish church, the Auferstehungskirche in the Tieloh, was built from 1916 to 1920 to plans by Camillo Günther. St. Gabriel on the Hartzlohplatz and the St. Bonifatiuskirche followed after the war. The Catholic St. Franziskus-Kirche is older, from the 1920s.
At the northern end of the quarter, toward Alsterdorf, the Asklepios Klinik Barmbek, first the Allgemeines Krankenhaus Barmbek, has grounds laid out as a park.
What is the history of Barmbek-Nord?
Barmbek-Nord was mostly farmland of the Barmbek farmers until the late 19th century. When the building of the Speicherstadt cleared a large workers' district in 1883, the fields to the north-east were opened up for housing. In the late Weimar years more than four thousand flats rose here in the Neue Sachlichkeit style, mainly around the Habichtsplatz.
War destroyed or badly damaged 93 percent of the homes. It was rebuilt to plan by 1956.
