About Barmbek-Süd
What are the main landmarks in Barmbek-Süd?
Barmbek-Süd's St. Sophienkirche, consecrated in 1900, was Barmbek's first Catholic church, endowed by Wilhelm Anton Riedemann, founder of the Deutsch-Amerikanische Petroleumgesellschaft, whose wife was called Sophie. A Dominican priory has been attached to it since 1962. Almost opposite stands the Lutheran Bugenhagenkirche at the Schleidenpark, built in 1929.
The Ali Paşa Mosque is on the Hamburger Straße, and a memorial of 1985 by the sculptor Hildegard Huza remembers the victims of the 1943 bombing.
What is the history of Barmbek-Süd?
Barmbek-Süd belongs to the old village of Barmbek, first recorded in 1271 as Bernebeke, after the brook now called the Osterbek. The Hospital zum Heiligen Geist held the lordship until 1830, when Hamburg took over. Horse trams arrived in 1867.
The later workers' suburb, centred north of Mundsburg station, was one focus of the Hamburg Uprising of 1923. Operation Gomorrha largely destroyed that centre in July 1943; 370 people died in the Karstadt shelters alone.
Where is Barmbek-Süd?
Barmbek-Süd has Barmbek-Nord and Winterhude north of the Osterbekkanal, Dulsberg east of the S-Bahn embankment, Eilbek south and Uhlenhorst west.
