About Eilbek
What are the main landmarks in Eilbek?
Eilbek's Friedenskirche on the Papenstraße, a neo-Gothic church by Johannes Otzen, was consecrated in 1885 as the quarter's first parish church. The Versöhnungskirche on the Eilbektal followed in 1916-20 to plans by Fernando Lorenzen. The former Osterkirche, a cemetery chapel of 1863-64 by Alexis de Chateauneuf, has belonged to the Bulgarian Orthodox community since 2019.
A few graves remain in the Jacobipark.
What is the history of Eilbek?
Eilbek was first recorded in 1247 as Ylenbeke, roughly 'leech brook', and leeches for medicine were caught here until the late 19th century. For about 600 years it belonged to the Hospital zum Heiligen Geist. After the Great Fire of 1842 some homeless Hamburgers settled here; it became a suburb in 1874 and a Hamburg Stadtteil in 1894.
The air raids of July 1943 destroyed it almost completely.
