About Eppendorf
What are the main landmarks in Eppendorf?
Eppendorf's St. Johanniskirche, one of Hamburg's oldest churches, stands on the Alster by the bridge to Winterhude; its tower probably dates from the early 13th century and its timber-framed nave from 1622. Samuel Heinicke, a pioneer of deaf education, was its cantor from 1768 to 1778. The Kloster St. Johannis has stood on the Heilwigstraße by the Alster since 1914.
The Universitätsklinikum Hamburg-Eppendorf was begun in 1884 as a pavilion hospital.
What is the history of Eppendorf?
Eppendorf, first recorded in 1140 as Eppenthorp, is Hamburg's oldest village. The heirs of the Schauenburg counts sold it in 1343 to the Herwardeshude convent, and after the Reformation it passed in 1530 to the Kloster St. Johannis foundation, which held it for three centuries. Davout's troops burned much of the village in 1813.
Eppendorf joined Hamburg as a Stadtteil in 1894, the year the first electric tram reached it.
