What are the main landmarks in Harvestehude?

Harvestehude's St. Nikolai am Klosterstern was built in the 1960s to replace the bombed main church in the Altstadt, with a window by Elisabeth Coester and an altarpiece by Oskar Kokoschka. The Catholic St. Elisabeth dates from 1926. Twelve towers of eight to 14 storeys, the Grindelhochhäuser, were built from 1949 to 1956 for the British occupying power.

NDR, the northern German broadcaster, has its seat in the Funkhaus on the Rothenbaumchaussee.

What is the history of Harvestehude?

Harvestehude takes its name from the convent of Herwardeshude, which moved here from the Pepermölenbek near the later Altona and stood north-west of the Eichenpark from 1293 until it was pulled down in 1530. In 1860 a consortium of Hamburg citizens bought the Harvestehude estate, laid out streets and sold the plots, mostly to speculators who built villas and grand apartment houses. It became one of Hamburg's grandest quarters.

The Second World War heavily damaged the streets around the Grindelberg.

Where is Harvestehude?

Harvestehude borders Rotherbaum to the south and Eimsbüttel to the west, while the Isebekkanal divides it from Eppendorf, Hoheluft-West and Hoheluft-Ost.
