Rotherbaum is a genteel university quarter of Hamburg in the Eimsbüttel borough, set between the Außenalster and the streets of the Grindelberg.

About Rotherbaum

Where to stay in Rotherbaum

Each area has its own feel; here's who each one suits.

Rotherbaum suits travellers who want a refined base by the water rather than the tourist core of Hamburg. Beds here line the leafy streets between the Außenalster and the Grindelberg, close to the Museum at the Rothenbaum and a cluster of university museums, in one of the city's calmest residential quarters. The tone is quiet and moneyed.

If you want the Alster on your doorstep and Harvestehude next door, Rotherbaum places you among the villas and the Zoological Museum Hamburg.

About Rotherbaum

What are the main landmarks in Rotherbaum?

Rotherbaum holds one of the densest runs of museums in Hamburg. The Museum at the Rothenbaum, the Zoological Museum Hamburg, and the Mineralogisches Museum Hamburg gather near the Grindelberg, while the Lessing-Denkmal and the Kindertransport memorial mark the quarter's public squares. Water frames the east.

The Außenalster spreads along Rotherbaum's edge toward Harvestehude, and the memorial at the former Synagogue Oberstraße recalls an older chapter of the quarter.

What is the history of Rotherbaum?

Rotherbaum grew out of the Grindel, an inner district of Hamburg that became both a centre of learning and a heart of the city's Jewish life. The Universität Hamburg drew its museums into these streets, while the Grindelberg carried the shops and homes of a large Jewish community. That community was torn apart.

The Kindertransport memorial and the memorial at the former Synagogue Oberstraße keep its memory in Rotherbaum, within the Eimsbüttel borough of Hamburg.

Where is Rotherbaum?

Rotherbaum lies in the Eimsbüttel borough of Hamburg, running from the western shore of the Außenalster across the Grindelberg toward Harvestehude.
