Where to stay in Eversten

The practical side of choosing where to sleep.

Two sub-districts belong to it. Thomasburg and Bodenburg are counted within Eversten, and the Stadtteil sits west of the Oldenburg centre in the ground once called Vor dem Eversten Thor. Peat kept it empty for centuries.

The land was swamp and moor, worked mainly for turf, and the counts of Oldenburg forbade building on it, so almost nobody lived here until well into the 17th century. Settlement followed drainage. The first farmable ground lay west of what is now the A 28.

About Eversten

What are the main landmarks in Eversten?

A drainage ditch made the place habitable. The Bloherfelder Wasserzug was cut in 1648 to drain the peat bogs in front of the Wildenloh, and only after that could anyone settle the ground in numbers. A school marks the first core.

The earliest settlers began working the poor land around 1700, and the first school went up in 1746 in the settlement core that formed west of the present A 28, on the most usable farmland. Woods and moor still carry the names. Eversten Holz and Everstenmoor record what covered this ground before the ditches and the settlers.

What is the history of Eversten?

The parish came first, then the name. Eversten and the ground around it lie in the northwest corner of the Saxon Lerigau called Der Winkel, and until 1463 they belonged to the Kirchspiel Westerstede, now Westerburg, which is not the Westerstede in the neighbouring Ammerland. Before that it was Nortwinkele.

The area carried that name, taken from its position in the north of the Winkel, and Everse is attested only from the end of the 14th century. A knightly family gave it the name. The von Eversen had their seat there from the 13th century and died out early in the 16th, and the first settlement of the swamp and moor about the year 1200 was their doing.

Then nothing happened for four hundred years. The ground stayed largely unsettled well into the 17th century, partly because the counts of Oldenburg banned building on it, and it served mainly for cutting peat. Drainage broke the deadlock.

The Bloherfelder Wasserzug of 1648 drained the bogs in front of the Wildenloh, the first settlers came about 1700, and the first school was built in 1746.

Where is Eversten?

Eversten lies west of the Oldenburg centre and takes in Thomasburg and Bodenburg, on former swamp and moor between the A 28 and the Wildenloh, with Eversten Holz and Everstenmoor along its edges.
