This was the largest village in the Ammerland. Twenty Hausmannshöfe stood at Ohmstede, more than any of its neighbours, helped by a position that gave it access to the fat pastures and meadows of the Hunte marsh as well as the Geest and the moor the other villages had. Proximity to Oldenburg counted too.
The residence town lay close, which is the other half of why the village grew as it did. Its farms spread over several parts. Waterende, Loyerende and Överkamp took them, with the single farm Schellstede standing apart.

Everything here starts from the Esch. Ohmstede was an Esch settlement like many villages of the region, its farmland gathered on the high ground and its farms ranged around it, and the Dornsteder Esch still names one edge of it. Cottagers made a second village.
Younger sons leaving the farms settled early as Köter, so the Köterdorf of Bornhorst had formed by the 13th century, and Kortendorf on the edge of the Dornsteder Esch is another. Rastede holds the first document. A confirmation by Pope Hadrian IV to the monastery there in 1158 is what puts Ohmstede in writing.
What is the history of Ohmstede?
A papal confirmation gives the first date. On 17 February 1158 Pope Hadrian IV confirmed to the monastery of Rastede that its lands reached ad confinium Omestede, as far as the boundary of Ohmstede, which is the earliest documentary mention of the village. Settlement is older than the document.
The place probably stood from at least the 9th century, and it was laid out as an Esch settlement in the manner of the region. Its size came from its ground. Twenty Hausmannshöfe made Ohmstede the largest village of the Ammerland, because unlike its neighbours it had the fat pastures and meadows of the Hunte marsh on top of the Geest and the moor.
Cottagers spread out early. Younger farm sons settled as Köter from early on, which produced the Köterdorf of Bornhorst by the 13th century and Kortendorf at the edge of the Dornsteder Esch. It became a commune and then a Stadtteil.
Ohmstede ran as a commune from 1897 to 1933 before Oldenburg took it in as one of its districts.
