One monument is famous for being misread. The Metternicher Eule on the Kimmelberg is a war memorial from the Prussian period that actually shows a seated eagle, but from a distance it looks enough like an owl that the name stuck. Churches divide the Stadtteil.
St. Johannes and St. Konrad are the two Catholic parishes, with a Protestant church alongside. A loess profile is protected here. The Eiszeitliches Lößprofil nature reserve sits within Metternich.
What is the history of Metternich?
People were here in the Stone Age. Finds below the Kimmelberg point to very early settlement of the Metternich area. Rome left five centuries of evidence.
Roman material from the first five centuries was found northwest of the Stadtteil. Franks followed them. Merovingian grave finds southwest of the village core show that they settled here too.
The city took it in 1937. Metternich was incorporated into Koblenz that year, and what it holds now is a university campus, a Bundeswehr hospital and a protected ice-age loess profile alongside its two Catholic parishes.
