Koblenz keeps the beds. Niederberg is a hill quarter of houses above Ehrenbreitstein, so a stay here means the fortress and the Deutsches Eck are a ride down rather than a walk. Barracks shaped the plateau.
The Fritsch-Kaserne was built on the Niederberger Höhe in 1937 and served the Bundeswehr until 1998, and part of it now holds a police unit and the Koblenz branch of the state archaeology directorate. Arenberg and Urbar are the neighbours.

What are the main landmarks in Niederberg?
The Roman fort is the whole point of this hill. Excavations in 1895 showed it measured 177 by 158 metres, and it stood seven kilometres from the limes as a bridgehead controlling the road that ran past Ehrenbreitstein into Koblenz. A vicus grew around it.
The fort lasted until the Romans gave up the right bank about the year 260 after the Frankish offensive, and the ground has been part of the UNESCO world heritage site of the Upper German and Raetian limes since 2005. Houses cover most of it now. Undisturbed archaeological deposits survive in the gaps between them, which the city has designated an excavation protection area, and digging resumed there in 2002.
Two Prussian works stand on the same ground: Fort Rheineck and the Werk Pleitenberg.
What is the history of Niederberg?
Romans built the Kastell Niederberg about the year 100. It held auxiliary troops, strengthened the Upper German limes and guarded the way north into the Neuwied basin and the climb from the Rhine valley to the Westerwald. Settlement carried on after the fort.
Roman burials west of Niederberg and Merovingian graves on the road to Arenberg show occupation through the fourth and fifth centuries and then under the Franks. A charter names the village in the eleventh century. Egilbert von Ortenburg, archbishop of Trier, gave the church of St Pankratius to the abbey of St Eucharius in an undated document, and the place came to be called Nieder am Berg against Arenberg's Ober am Berg.
The Helfenstein family judged here until the sixteenth century. After them an Amtmann of the Trier archbishops took the office, Niederberg belonging to the electoral Amt Ehrenbreitstein until the French revolutionary army broke the electorate up. Nassau-Weilburg received it in 1803.
The siege of the Ehrenbreitstein fortress had destroyed the village in 1795, Prussia put it in the Landkreis Koblenz in 1816, and Koblenz took it on 1 July 1937.
