About Areeta

What are the main landmarks in Areeta?

The list is unusually domestic. Casa de Elías López Bustamante, Casa Zubizarreta, Casa Senditzuegi and Edificio Vicenta Durañona fill much of it, alongside the Church of Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes and the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Carmen. Monuments to Evaristo de Churruca and Víctor Chávarri stand among them, and the Campo Municipal de Gobela and Restaurante Jolastoki appear on the same record.

Some entries are not in Areeta at all. The Basilica of Santa María, the Casa Torre de Salazar and the Rialia Museum of Industry are recorded at Portugalete.

What is the history of Areeta?

Areeta is young ground. The neighbourhood was built over the sands of a beach in the early 20th century, where the Gobela Creek spread into a diffuse delta at the mouth of the Estuary of Bilbao, and the record keeps Las Arenas as its other name. Industry left its marks on the file.

Babcock & Wilcox herria, El Progreso sozietate kooperatiboa and Villa Nueva Kooperatiba sit beside the villa names, and Evaristo de Churruca and Víctor Chávarri are commemorated in stone.

Where is Areeta?

Areeta lies at the mouth of the Estuary of Bilbao on sand the Gobela Creek left behind, with Algorta the next neighbourhood of Getxo along.
