Hukanhauta, Joensuu — Area Guide & Where to Stay

The Pielisensuun kirkko marks the district. It serves the south-eastern reach of Joensuu from the boundary with Niinivaara, and for most else the quarter looks toward the centre of the city, where the Joensuun kirkko and the Pohjois-Karjalan museo Hilma gather beside the Pielisjoki. Homes fill the ground here.

A residential corner rather than a sightseeing one, Hukanhauta keeps its bearings from this church and from the wider North Karelian capital that surrounds it in the lakeland of eastern Finland.

Joensuu was chartered in 1848 at the outfall of the Pielisjoki, and for its first decades the town held to the riverbanks. Growth came slowly outward. As the regional capital of North Karelia spread south-east through the twentieth century, housing reached the wooded ground that became Hukanhauta, and the Pielisensuun kirkko rose to serve the new quarters alongside neighbouring Niinivaara.

The district took shape as part of that expansion, a residential edge of the lakeland kaupunki well away from the older centre by the river.

Hukanhauta lies on the south-eastern side of Joensuu. The streets run back from the inner quarters toward the wooded edge of the city, set in the lakeland of eastern Finland where the Pielisjoki works its way down through the regional capital of North Karelia to the lakeshores beyond. The neighbouring district of Niinivaara rises to the west, and the Pielisensuun kirkko, shared with that quarter, stands as the nearest church of this part of the kaupunki.
