About Niinivaara
What are the main landmarks in Niinivaara?
Two landmarks set this district apart. The Pohjois-Karjalan museo Hilma gathers the regional story of North Karelia within Niinivaara, while the Pielisensuun kirkko, shared with neighbouring Hukanhauta, serves the southern quarters of Joensuu. The centre holds more still.
A short way north, the Joensuun kirkko and the streets by the Pielisjoki draw most visitors, yet Niinivaara stands out among the residential districts of the lakeland city for keeping a museum and a church of its own.
What is the history of Niinivaara?
Joensuu was chartered in 1848 by the Pielisjoki, and for its early decades it kept to the level ground near the water. The hills came later into the city. As the regional capital of North Karelia grew through the twentieth century, housing climbed the southern rise that became Niinivaara, the Pielisensuun kirkko was raised to serve these quarters alongside Hukanhauta, and the Pohjois-Karjalan museo Hilma later settled here to hold the region's past.
The district stands as a southern reach of the lakeland kaupunki, shaped well after the founding by the river.
Where is Niinivaara?
Niinivaara holds the southern side of Joensuu. It rises on the ground south of the centre of the regional capital of North Karelia, set in the lakeland of eastern Finland where the Pielisjoki runs down toward the lakeshores beyond the market town. The district of Hukanhauta lies to the east, and the two share the Pielisensuun kirkko, while Niinivaara also carries the Pohjois-Karjalan museo Hilma within its bounds.
