Heinäpää, Oulu — Area Guide & Where to Stay

Three markers define Heinäpää. The Pyhän Kolminaisuuden katedraali is the Orthodox cathedral, the most recognisable building of the district. The Noitavainojen uhrien muistomerkki remembers those killed in the witch persecutions, a sober counterweight set into the southern Oulu streets.

For sport there is the Heinäpään jalkapallohalli, the indoor football hall that gives the quarter its name in fixture lists across Pohjois-Pohjanmaa.

Heinäpää carries one of Oulu's heavier memories. The Noitavainojen uhrien muistomerkki stands here, a monument to the victims of the witch persecutions, fixing the district to a dark chapter of Pohjois-Pohjanmaa's past. Faith later took a gentler form in the Pyhän Kolminaisuuden katedraali, the Orthodox cathedral that became the quarter's landmark.

The district settled into the southern grid of the growing city.

Heinäpää lies in southern Oulu, an inland block of the city set back from the Gulf of Bothnia shore that the district of Hietasaari fronts to the north-west. Streets, not water, define it.
