About Tykki

What are the main landmarks in Tykki?

This is the district to walk for history. The Wolkoffin talomuseo opens a merchant home, the Lappeenrannan museot draw the threads together, and the Lappeen kirkko adds one of the oldest churches in Lappeenranta. Outdoors, the Tykistökoulun muistomerkki and the Rakuunakivi stand among the memorials, with the Comet Mk I Model B and other tanks parked nearby.

What is the history of Tykki?

Garrison and merchant life built this district. Tykki carries Lappeenranta's military memory close to the surface, its very name echoing the artillery that trained here, and that past is set in stone across the area through the Tykistökoulun muistomerkki and the Tykistörykmenttien muistomerkki, the Rakuunakivi marking the old dragoons, and regimental stones like the JR 4:n muistokivi and the Lallukan hautamuistomerkki. Cannon stand on display too.

Among them are the Comet Mk I Model B, the Charioteer Mk VII Model B and the German Sturmgeschütz III Ausführung G, lined up as open-air relics of the city's defensive role on this south-eastern frontier of Finland. Faith and trade left their own marks. The Lappeen kirkko and the Lappeenrannan kirkko hold the district's church history, while the Wolkoffin talo and its Wolkoffin talomuseo preserve the home and shop of a merchant family, all of it gathered into the wider story told by the Lappeenrannan museot.

Where is Tykki?

The district lies across the southern part of Lappeenranta. Its old streets gather around the Lappeenrannan kirkko and the timber Wolkoffin talo, with the city's museum quarter spread close at hand.
