Nummi, Turku — Area Guide & Where to Stay

Churches and small museums anchor Nummi. The Pyhän Katariinan kirkko stands as the parish church of this eastern side of Turku, while the Turun Koroisten kirkko marks Koroinen, the riverside knoll above the Aurajoki where the medieval bishop's seat once stood. Two collections add to the draw.

The Turun yliopiston eläinmuseo, the zoological museum of the university, and the Turun vesilaitosmuseo, the city waterworks museum, both sit within this district of the Varsinais-Suomi region rather than in any of the central quarters of Turku.

Nummi reaches back through Koroinen. The knoll of Koroinen above the Aurajoki, marked by the Turun Koroisten kirkko, held the seat of the bishop before the cathedral rose downstream, making this eastern ground older than much of Turku itself. Settlement spread slowly outward.

As the city grew along the river, Nummi was drawn into Turku as a residential district, gathering the university's grounds and parish life around the Pyhän Katariinan kirkko, and taking its place among the eastern quarters of the Varsinais-Suomi region.

Nummi sits in eastern Turku in south-western Finland, on the inland side of the city where the streets climb away from the centre toward the upper Aurajoki, with the university grounds and the older quarters between it and the river mouth.
