What are the main landmarks in Port Arthur?
There is no monument here. Port Arthur is a low-built residential quarter of south-western Turku, known for its grid of timber houses near the harbour rather than for any tower or church. The streets are the landmark.
Wooden dwellings line the lanes that run down toward the mouth of the Aurajoki, set apart from the central quarters of Turku and from the inland districts such as Nummi, Runosmäki, and Varissuo on the eastern and northern sides of the city. The harbour edge marks the western limit of this part of the Varsinais-Suomi region.
What is the history of Port Arthur?
Port Arthur grew with the harbour. The name carried over from the besieged Russian fortress of its era, and the district rose as a workers' quarter of timber houses on the south-western edge of Turku, close to the docks at the mouth of the Aurajoki. Work drew people to the water.
As the port and its trades expanded, the wooden lanes filled in between the centre and the harbour, and Port Arthur settled into its place among the western districts of Turku within the Varsinais-Suomi region.
