Runosmäki, Turku — Area Guide & Where to Stay

The draws here are everyday ones. On the slopes around Runosmäki stands the Pallivahan kirkko, the local church serving this northern side of Turku, while the Impivaaran liikuntakeskus offers a large sports and swimming centre on the way down to the city. Families come for the water.

The Jukupark Turku, an outdoor water park, sits on the same northern fringe and pulls summer crowds out from the centre. These are neighbourhood landmarks, not grand monuments, the markers of a built-up residential district on the northern rim of the Varsinais-Suomi capital.

Runosmäki rose from the hill. It was built as a planned residential district on the northern edge of Turku, a suburb of apartment blocks raised to house the growing city, and the Pallivahan kirkko was set among the new streets to serve them. The blocks made the place.

Where forest and farmland had stood, dense housing climbed the slope, and sports and leisure followed with the Impivaaran liikuntakeskus and later the Jukupark Turku on the way toward the centre. Runosmäki became one of the larger residential suburbs of the Varsinais-Suomi capital, a northern hill of homes above Turku.
