What are the main landmarks in Pont de Vivaux?
The hippodrome is the largest thing in the quarter. It stands among the housing and is what Pont-de-Vivaux is known for beyond its own streets. A shopping centre came later.
One including a Castorama brought new economic life to the quarter. The old core is the trading strip. A pharmacy, a bookshop, a bar-tabac, a post office and a discount store make up the heart of the place, which is small for a quarter of this size.
What is the history of Pont de Vivaux?
The hamlet lies between two others. Pont-de-Vivaux sits between la Capelette and Saint-Loup at the point where the route nationale 8 crosses the Huveaune, and the first half of its name needs no argument, since there is a bridge and the hamlet took its name from it. The second half is a family.
In the 11th century the quarter carried the name of one of its owners, and there was a vineyard called de Sorbier, recorded as vinea nominata Sorbairosa, a term still in use three hundred years later. Vivauds appear as magistrates for a century. A Guillaume Vivaud signed as consul in 1178 an act granting privileges to the knights of Saint John of Jerusalem, another Guillaume Vivaud was among the magistrates who bought Roucelin's remaining seigneurial rights in 1213, and as syndic of the commune in 1226 he concluded a treaty between Marseille and the king of Aragon.
The family held office into the 1230s. Hugues Vivaud was syndic in 1232, son of Raymond Vivaud, whose name appears in an act of 26 September 1233.
