About Carabacel
What are the main landmarks in Carabacel?
The museums here belong to Nice. Its pull is the ring of sights the slope links, starting near Place Garibaldi at its lower end, where the musée d'art moderne et d'art contemporain de Nice shows post-war and pop art behind a marble-clad front. Uphill toward Cimiez stands the musée Marc-Chagall, built around the painter's Biblical Message cycle, with the Musée Matisse and the Monastère de Cimiez higher still.
Cemenelum, the Roman town whose baths and arena survive as ruins, lies up there too, in Cimiez. Below, the Monument to Giuseppe Garibaldi anchors its square.
What is the history of Carabacel?
Carabacel grew as Nice turned into a winter resort for northern Europeans, when building spread off the flat centre and up the sheltered slopes below Cimiez. Hotels and villas rose along the new boulevard to house guests who came for the mild season. The quarter lay between two older poles.
Nearer the sea stood the medieval old town, while on the heights sat Cimiez, where the Roman town of Cemenelum had stood since antiquity. As the Paillon was covered over and the grand hotel trade faded, the lower streets knit into the growing city and Carabacel settled into the residential quarter it remains.
Where is Carabacel?
The quarter fills the ground between the city centre around Avenue Jean Médecin and the hill of Cimiez rising above it. Its lower edge meets the valley of the Paillon, close to Place Garibaldi and the top of the old town. Boulevard Carabacel carries the slope uphill.
Streets branch off it toward the foot of Cimiez, northwest, where the musée Marc-Chagall stands.
