About Riquier
What are the main landmarks in Riquier?
Two of the region's oldest sites lie on the hillside toward the port: Terra Amata, with its early hearths, and the prehistoric cave of the Grotte du Lazaret. At the harbour stands the Église Notre-Dame du Port. Inland, the Salesian Église Notre-Dame-Auxiliatrice de Nice anchors the residential streets.
East above the shore, the Château de l'Anglais crowns Mont Boron, and the Monument to Giuseppe Garibaldi presides over Place Garibaldi at the quarter's western edge.
What is the history of Riquier?
The story of this ground runs deep. On the slopes above the port, Terra Amata records human camps from hundreds of thousands of years ago, and the Grotte du Lazaret preserves one of the region's important prehistoric caves. Riquier itself took shape far later, as an eastern working quarter that spread inland from the harbour of Nice.
The Salesian order raised the Église Notre-Dame-Auxiliatrice de Nice to serve its growing streets. Its make-up has stayed practical and residential.
Where is Riquier?
The quarter lies east of the Old Town of Nice, hemmed by the Colline du Château on one side and the rise of Mont Boron on the other. Its southern edge meets the Port Lympia. Down at the water stands the Église Notre-Dame du Port, and Place Garibaldi marks the western corner where Riquier gives way to the city centre.
