Valrose is a residential quarter in the north of Nice, the part of the city known as Nice Nord. It takes its name from the Château de Valrose, the 19th-century estate whose park and buildings anchor the neighbourhood. Few hotels reach up the hill. Valrose is a residential and university quarter, so most visitors to Nice sleep elsewhere and treat it as a quiet alternative to the crowded centre. Its leafy streets and the green of the Parc Valrose suit travellers who value calm nights and a student-town rhythm over nightlife.
Tram line 1 links it to the seafront and the old town in minutes, which keeps a base here practical for budget sightseeing. For beach mornings and busier evenings, stay in central Nice instead.

What are the main landmarks in Quartier de Valrose?
The neighbourhood's landmark is the Château de Valrose itself, the grand villa a Russian baron built here in the late 1860s. Around it spreads the Parc Valrose, ten hectares of landscaped grounds open to the public and dotted with statuary and rare trees. A smaller second château, the Petit Château, stands within the same estate.
Both buildings now serve the Faculty of Sciences of Université Côte d'Azur, so the grounds double as a working campus. There is little else to tick off. For museums and churches, the visitor looks to central Nice.
What is the history of Quartier de Valrose?
The quarter grew around an estate laid out for Baron Paul von Derwies, a Russian railway financier who bought the land in 1867. Between 1867 and 1870 hundreds of workmen raised his château and shaped the surrounding park. Von Derwies did not enjoy it long.
After the baron's era the property passed through other hands before the French state took it over. A decree of 1965 made the château the seat of the new University of Nice, turning a private pleasure-ground into a science campus. The whole estate was listed as a historic monument in 1991.
Where is Quartier de Valrose?
Valrose lies in Nice Nord, well inland from the seafront. Its main axis, the Avenue de Valrose, climbs uphill from the Libération quarter to the university campus, with Boulevard de Cessole running along its western flank. The Borriglione quarter adjoins it to the north.
Tram line 1 skirts the eastern edge.
