What are the main landmarks in Barkerend?
Paper Hall heads the roll. Bradford Conditioning House stands on the same list, and the four churches spread through the district, St Augustine's Church, Holy Trinity Church, the Church of St Mary and the Church of St Clement, give Barkerend most of its named architecture. Undercliffe Cemetery runs along one boundary.
Boldshay Hall and Butler House are the quieter names on it, older houses left standing when the terraces went up around them.
What is the history of Barkerend?
The hall names come first here. Paper Hall, Boldshay Hall and Butler House carry back to a Barkerend of scattered houses, before Bradford's growth reached east of the centre and filled the ground with streets. Bradford Conditioning House belongs to the industrial city that came after.
Three monuments keep individual names in stone, the Mawson Monument, the Swithun Anderton Monument and the Miles Moulson Monument. Pollard Park came later, a stretch of modern housing set inside the older street pattern.
