The name predates the battle. Freedom Fields carried it from the defeat of a French invasion force two hundred years earlier, ground that later saw the townsfolk of Plymouth resist Cavalier raiding parties. That resistance let the town sustain the royalist siege.
Terraces came afterwards, some of them divided into bedsits and flats, and the field survives as public open space at the centre of Lipson.
