Copthorne is residential ground between the town centre and the edge of Shrewsbury, gathered around Copthorne Road, Mytton Oak Road, and Shelton Road. The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital stands at its western end, and Shelton lies beyond that. It is an easy walk in.

About Copthorne

What are the main landmarks in Copthorne?

What remains of Copthorne Barracks stands on Copthorne Road, once headquarters of the British Army's 5th Division and of 143 Brigade, and now given over to the Shrewsbury Air Training Corps and the Shropshire Army Cadet Force. Housing covers most of the old site. The Copthorne Keep development was built across it, and the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital at the western end was itself once called Copthorne Hospital.

What is the history of Copthorne?

The barracks made this suburb. Copthorne Barracks served as headquarters for the 5th Division and for 143 Brigade, and when the army gave up most of the site the Copthorne Keep housing development was built over it, leaving a remnant for the cadet organisations that use it now. The hospital changed names on the same ground, becoming the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital after years as Copthorne Hospital.

Where is Copthorne?

Copthorne runs west from Frankwell Island, where Copthorne Bank meets New Street, out to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital and Shelton on the outskirts of Shrewsbury. Radbrook Road divides it from Radbrook in the south. New Street drops south-west from Frankwell to the Boat House and the Port Hill Footbridge across to The Quarry, then climbs Porthill past the grounds of Shrewsbury School to meet the old bypass.
