What are the main landmarks in Ditherington?
Charles Bage designed the Flax Mill, built in 1797 for John Marshall of Leeds and his partners; it is the oldest iron-framed building in the world, seen as the grandfather of skyscrapers, and it is listed Grade I. After decades derelict it was restored and opened to the public in September 2022. Its Apprentice House stands with it, and Emmanuel is close by.
What is the history of Ditherington?
The mill is the story. Known locally as the Maltings, the Flax Mill went up in 1797, and the Shrewsbury and Newport Canal ended here, though the canal no longer exists. It then lay derelict for decades until Historic England and the Friends of the Flaxmill Maltings restored it.
Until 2012 the town's bus depot stood in Ditherington; that year a new one opened in Harlescott.
