Dean Village was long known as the Water of Leith Village, a milling settlement strung along the river below Edinburgh. Grain was ground here for more than 800 years, and at its peak no fewer than eleven mills worked the valley, each turned by water drawn from the Water of Leith. The wheels ran for centuries.
When the milling trade faded, the village lost its industry and slipped into quiet obscurity beside the water. Its stranded stone housing survived largely because the world moved on around it.
Where is Dean Village?
The village sits in a steep dene cut by the Water of Leith, a short walk downhill from Edinburgh's West End. Belford Road bounds it to the south and west, Belgrave Crescent Gardens close it off to the north, and the Dean Bridge crosses high overhead to the east. From here the riverside walkway runs downstream toward Stockbridge.
