Inverleith is an inner residential suburb in the north of Edinburgh, lying just beyond the top of the New Town. Its anchor is the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh. The garden's glasshouses and lawns fill much of the area's eastern side, while the open grass of Inverleith Park spreads across its western flank toward Stockbridge. Broad Victorian villas line the streets in between.

What are the main landmarks in Inverleith?
The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh is the neighbourhood's great set piece, its Victorian glasshouses and rock garden reaching from Inverleith Row across to Arboretum Place. Inverleith House stands at its centre. Across the road, Inverleith Park opens into broad playing fields, a boating pond and a long view south to the city's castle skyline.
To the west rise the gothic spires of Fettes College, a landmark for the whole north side of the city.
What is the history of Inverleith?
The district takes its name from the old barony of Inverleith, farmland long held by the Rocheid family on the northern edge of the burgh. Inverleith House dates from the 1770s. The Royal Botanic Garden moved onto the estate's fields in the 1820s, shifting from an older site near Leith Walk.
Fettes College opened in 1870, and the city laid out Inverleith Park on former estate land in the 1880s. Terraces and villas filled the ground between through the later nineteenth century.
Where is Inverleith?
Inverleith spreads across a low shelf of ground north of Edinburgh's New Town, with Trinity beyond it to the north and the older tenements of the city centre climbing away to the south. Canonmills sits at its south-eastern corner. Stockbridge adjoins the south-west, and Inverleith Row runs the length of the eastern edge.
The Water of Leith threads along its southern fringe before winding on toward the Firth of Forth.
