What is Western Region known for?
Ghana's southernmost location sits inside the Western Region, and crude oil was discovered there in commercial quantities in June 2007. Sekondi-Takoradi holds the capital's role. The large twin city on the coast is the region's administrative seat, and it sits along the same shoreline as coastal Axim, with the hilly inland area around Elubo behind.
The Ivory Coast forms the western limit.
Where is Western Region?
The Western Region occupies south Ghana. It spreads from the Ivory Coast in the west to the Central region in the east, so the whole width of the region is measured between an international border on one side and a neighbouring Ghanaian region on the other. The coastline runs the same span.
It stretches from the border with the Ivory Coast to the boundary with the Central region, which makes the shore not a segment of the region but its full southern length. Cape Three Points marks the end of it. Ghana's southernmost location sits on that shore, the point past which there is no more country, and it is the feature the region's coastal geography builds toward.
Inland the ground rises. A hilly inland area including Elubo sits behind the coast, which gives the Western Region two distinct kinds of country instead of one continuous coastal plain. Two named places sit on the shore.
Sekondi-Takoradi, the capital and large twin city, and coastal Axim both belong to the seaward side, so the region's principal settlements read as coastal rather than inland. Oil enters the account at that point. Crude oil was discovered in commercial quantities at Cape Three Points in June 2007, which attached a resource story to the same headland that already marked the country's southernmost location.
What is Western Region like?
English runs the public business. Across the Western Region it serves administration, signage and dealings with visitors, which keeps a coast that reaches to an international frontier accessible to arrivals from either direction. The capital is a double city.
Sekondi-Takoradi is described as a large twin city, a shape that gives the Western Region an administrative centre with two halves rather than a single historic core. Elubo belongs to the interior. The town is named within the hilly inland area, and life there sits apart from the coastal capital, giving the Western Region a second character that the shoreline alone would not suggest.
The border shapes the region's outlook. Its western limit is the Ivory Coast, and its eastern one the Central region, which places the Western Region between a foreign country and a Ghanaian neighbour rather than in the middle of the national map. Oil arrived in 2007.
The discovery of crude oil in commercial quantities at Cape Three Points that June added an industry to a region already defined by its coast, and the two share the same shoreline. Axim sits on the same coast. It is named alongside Sekondi-Takoradi among the Western Region's coastal places, so the shoreline carries both the administrative capital and a smaller coastal town within the same stretch.
What is the history of Western Region?
June 2007 gave the region a new line. Crude oil was discovered in commercial quantities at Cape Three Points, Ghana's southernmost location, and that discovery is the dated event the Western Region's account turns on. The coast is older than that.
Sekondi-Takoradi and coastal Axim were established places on the same shoreline before the oil, and the region's boundary with the Ivory Coast and with the Central region long preceded it. Elubo holds the inland side.
What is the climate of Western Region?
The sea reaches the whole southern length. A coastline that runs from the Ivory Coast border to the boundary with the Central region means no part of the Western Region's shore is far from open water, and conditions along it differ from the hilly inland area behind. Elevation makes the difference inland.
Ground rising behind the coast toward Elubo gives the region a second set of conditions, so a plan made for the shore near Sekondi-Takoradi does not describe the interior.
How do you get to Western Region?
Sekondi-Takoradi is the way in. The capital and large twin city stands on the coast, and both coastal Axim and Elubo in the hilly interior are reached as onward legs rather than as separate arrival points. Two boundaries frame the approach.
The Ivory Coast lies at the western end and the Central region at the eastern, so the Western Region is entered from a neighbouring country on one side and from the rest of Ghana on the other.
