What is the history of Sérres?
Sérres was a great town of the Byzantines. It rose on the Macedonian plain in the days of the empire, walled and crowned by a citadel on its hill, and its churches were painted by the finest masters of the age. The empire held the hill.
For centuries Sérres guarded the road across Macedonia, changing hands between Greeks, Serbs, and Bulgarians before the Ottomans came. Under the Ottomans it grew rich on tobacco. The town spread on the plain as a market for the leaf grown across the country around, and its covered market and mosques rose among the old churches.
Fire and war swept the town. In the wars of the last century much of old Sérres was burned, and it was rebuilt as a modern city, though its citadel, its Byzantine churches, and its Ottoman market still stand. The tobacco fields still cover the plain.

Sérres lies in the northeast of Greek Macedonia, on a wide plain below the Menoikion mountains. The city stands at the foot of the green hills where the plain of the Strymon spreads out, a rich land of fields and tobacco, with the wetland of Lake Kerkini and its birds to the west. Wooded slopes rise above the town.
The plain reaches south to the sea.
What is the climate of Sérres?
Sérres has a temperate climate of the inland plain. Hot dry summers and cold winters cross the Macedonian lowland, sharper than the coast for its distance from the sea, with rain in spring and autumn. The plain bakes gold in high summer.

How do you get to Sérres?
Sérres lies in eastern Greek Macedonia, on the road and rail north of Thessaloniki. Buses and trains run to it across the plain from Thessaloniki and the north, and roads climb into the mountains. Roads run out to Lake Kerkini.
