Carmel Center, Haifa — Area Guide & Where to Stay

Carmel Center, or Merkaz HaCarmel, is Haifa's cultural quarter on the upper slopes of Mount Carmel, where museums and gardens share the ridge.

About Carmel Center

Where to stay in Carmel Center

Where you base yourself shapes the visit — here's the character of each area.

Beds on the ridge sit high. Carmel Center keeps most of the upper-slope hotels of Haifa within a few blocks of the Tikotin Museum of Japanese Art and the Haifa Cinematheque, so an evening screening never means a climb back up the mountain from the port. Cooler air is the other reason, since the crest catches a sea breeze that the harbour flats below never feel.

Choose here for museums, park space and the long view over the bay.

About Carmel Center

What are the main landmarks in Carmel Center?

The Tikotin Museum of Japanese Art keeps Japanese prints, screens and ceramics on the mountain, and the Haifa Cinematheque runs its screenings a few doors along the same ridge-top strip. Families climb to the Haifa Zoo and Botanical Gardens, where the Moshe Stekelis Museum of Prehistory traces the deep past of Mount Carmel. The Mane-Katz Museum stands in the painter's own house.

Out on the western headland rises the Stella Maris Monastery.

What is the history of Carmel Center?

Mount Carmel drew hermits and pilgrims long before any street reached the crest, and the Carmelite order took its name from the ridge, building at Stella Maris Monastery on the headland west of here. Haifa climbed slowly, spreading from its port through Hadar HaCarmel on the middle slope before houses reached the upper mountain and Carmel Center took shape. Museums followed the builders.

The quarter turned into the side of the city people came up to rather than passed through.

Where is Carmel Center?

Carmel Center spreads across roughly 680 dunams on the upper part of Mount Carmel, high above the port of Haifa and the bay it looks out over.
