Kayamkulam keeps its rooms in the municipal town, a compact place of about twenty-two square kilometres where the market, the Kadeesa Orthodox Cathedral and the road business of a trading centre share the same few streets. The town does the work. Krishnapuram Palace and the Shankar Memorial National Cartoon Museum and Art Gallery both sit close enough to visit from a room in the centre, which is the argument for staying here rather than commuting in from the larger coastal towns.
Alappuzha lies forty-six kilometres up the coast and Kollam roughly the same distance the other way, and either carries a deeper stock of rooms than Kayamkulam does. Both are day trips from here. The parish country between them holds the rest of the list, the Marthoma Church at Cheppad, the Saint George Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Church at Cheppaud and Saint Mary's Cathedral at Mavelikkara, none of which supports lodging of its own, so a traveller working that circuit sleeps in one of the towns and drives. Thiruvananthapuram lies about a hundred and ten kilometres to the south, well beyond the range of a day's errand from the municipality.

Kayamkulam was a trading place before it was an administrative one. Ships, not offices, made the town: it stood as a maritime trading centre on this stretch of the Kerala coast, roughly midway between Alappuzha and Kollam, and that position between two ports is the thread the rest of its record hangs on. Its beginnings carry no date.
Kollam and Alappuzha still bracket the town on either side of that coast. Krishnapuram Palace is the surviving monument of the older Kayamkulam. Administration came later and drew the modern outline.
