About Byculla

Where to stay in Byculla
Not every neighbourhood fits every trip — here's what each one is good for.
Byculla puts most of its rooms within reach of the Jijamata Udyaan gardens and the museum quarter that grew up beside them. Base by the gardens. Rooms near the Jijamata Udyaan gate open onto the zoo grounds and set the Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum, with its restored decorative-arts halls, a short walk from your door.
Stays toward the Gloria Church trade the garden green for the older Portuguese-founded parish streets and the Khada Parsi memorial column nearby. Pick by landmark.
About Byculla
What are the main landmarks in Byculla?
Jijamata Udyaan anchors the district. The old botanical garden and zoo spread across the quarter's green heart, and inside its gate the Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum keeps Mumbai's oldest decorative-arts collection under a restored painted ceiling. Museums cluster close.
Within a short walk stand the interactive halls of the Nehru Science Centre, the film galleries of the National Museum of Indian Cinema, the sports floors of the National Sports Club of India, the covered court of the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Indoor Stadium, and the small Antarang, Sex Health Information Art Gallery, while the Portuguese-founded Gloria Church and Ambroli Church and the cast-iron Khada Parsi memorial mark the older streets.
What is the history of Byculla?
Byculla grew as one of the older quarters of South Mumbai, its parish life marked by the Portuguese-founded Gloria Church and Ambroli Church. Churches came early. The Victorian city then set its civic institutions here, laying out the botanical garden that became Jijamata Udyaan and raising beside it the museum that now carries the name Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum, a building whose painted-and-gilt interior was restored to hold the collection again.
The cast-iron Khada Parsi column recalls a leading Parsi figure of that age. Later decades added the Nehru Science Centre to the western edge of the quarter.
Where is Byculla?
Byculla sits inland in South Mumbai, a tropical quarter built around the green of the Jijamata Udyaan gardens with the Nehru Science Centre closing its western edge.
