What is the history of Nariman Point?
Nariman Point was raised from the sea, reclaimed off the tip of the Mumbai peninsula as an extension of Marine Drive and named for a Parsi civic leader. Land came first. Over the decades the flat new ground was let to banks, airlines, and trading houses, and the cluster of high towers that followed pulled the city's commercial weight south until the point was read as the business district of Mumbai.
The older institutions kept their place inland. The Asiatic Society of Mumbai and the Cricket Club of India held their colonial addresses behind the reclaimed strip, giving the quarter a settled edge against the newer glass along the bay.
