What is the history of Sholapur?
Solapur grew where old roads crossed the plateau. An old town on the Deccan, it gathered around the Siddheshwar temple in its lake and a strong land fort, and it passed through the hands of the Bahmani sultans, the Adil Shahis of Bijapur, and later the Marathas and the British. The fort still stands by the water.
Its thick walls and moat guarded the town on the open plain, and pilgrims came to the temple by the lake. Then the mills made it a working city. In the days of the British, cotton mills rose in Solapur, and the town became a centre of weaving, known for its towels and its thick Solapuri blankets.
The city gave the country a hero. Doctor Dwarkanath Kotnis of Solapur went to tend the wounded in China and died there, honoured ever since in both lands. The old temple still stands in its lake.
