Where to stay in Navi Mumbai

The practical side of choosing where to sleep.

Vashi is the usual first choice. It is the node nearest Mumbai, at the landward end of the Vashi Bridge, and its hotels gather along Palm Beach Road and around the station, where Inorbit Mall stands opposite the tracks and the shops and electronics dealers of Sector 17 are a short drive away. CBD Belapur suits a business trip.

Its hotels face the railway station and the highway to Pune, and The Park is in Sector 10. Kharghar, further east, is newer ground, with Central Park and the Pandavkada Falls at its edge. Panvel matters for trains. It is the only mainline station in the city, and every long-distance train halts there. Ulwe, in the south, is the node beside the Navi Mumbai International Airport.

About Navi Mumbai

Planning comes first.

What is Navi Mumbai known for?

CIDCO laid the city out as a chain of nodes, Vashi, Nerul and CBD Belapur among them, each divided into sectors and planned with its own schools. Cricket is the other draw: the DY Patil Stadium at Nerul staged the IPL finals of 2008 and 2010 and the final of the 2022 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup. A large share of the flamingos that settle around Mumbai are found here beside a stretch of mangroves, and the Jawaharlal Nehru Port at Nhava Sheva, in the south of the city, is the second-largest container port in India after Mundra.

What are the main landmarks in Navi Mumbai?

Belapur Fort is the oldest thing standing, a ruin on a small hill near the mouth of the Panvel Creek, built by the Siddis of Janjira in the late 1500s. Parsik Hill is the walkers' choice. It rises beside CBD Belapur and fills at the cool ends of the day.

Kharghar has Central Park, with an amphitheatre and an ISKCON temple, and the Pandavkada Falls, a monsoon waterfall where entry is restricted in the rains after fatal accidents. The Atal Setu, the longest sea bridge in India, runs from Sewri in Mumbai to Nhava Sheva.

What is the history of Navi Mumbai?

The Siddis of Janjira built a fort at Belapur in the late 1500s. Portuguese troops took it in 1682, the Marathas under Chimaji Appa in 1733 and the British East India Company in 1817, and the British then partly destroyed it. The city itself answered a crowding problem.

Greater Mumbai had doubled from three to nearly six million people between 1951 and 1971, so the state planned a twin city across the harbour on the mainland, and work began in 1971 with planners including Charles Correa, Shirish Patel and Pravina Mehta. CIDCO, created for the task, acquired the land of 86 villages. The Vashi Bridge opened in 1973.

Growth stayed slow until a wholesale produce market opened at Turbhe and the railway reached Vashi from Mankhurd in 1992. The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation was formed in 1991 to run seven of the nodes, and New Bombay stayed the official name until 1995. The Atal Setu opened in 2024, and the first flights left the Navi Mumbai International Airport on 25 December 2025.

Where is Navi Mumbai?

Navi Mumbai lies on the Konkan mainland east of Thane Creek, facing Salsette Island and Mumbai, whose centre is about 15 kilometres to the west. Its nodes run north to south. Airoli is the northern end, and the chain continues through Vashi, Nerul and CBD Belapur to Ulwe, Dronagiri and the port at Nhava Sheva.

The city covers 344 square kilometres, split between Thane district and Raigad district.

How do you get to Navi Mumbai?

Trains are the easy way in. Vashi, Nerul, Belapur and Panvel are the main stations. The Harbour line of the Mumbai suburban railway comes in from Mumbai, the Trans-Harbour line from Thane, and Panvel takes the long-distance trains.

The Navi Mumbai International Airport near Ulwe opened for flights in December 2025, and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai, about 16 kilometres to the west, is the main airport of the region. By road the Sion-Panvel Highway crosses the Vashi Bridge, and the Atal Setu reaches Nhava Sheva from Sewri.
