Where to stay in Valparai

Not every neighbourhood fits every trip — here's what each one is good for.

Altitude decides the night. Valparai stands high on the Anaimalai Hills, and a room here is a room in a hill station rather than in the plains towns below, which is the reason most people make the climb at all. Most of that land belongs to the tea companies, so the choice of address is largely a choice among the 56 estates and the roads that serve them.

Forest closes the rest. The Anamalai Tiger Reserve occupies the ground the estates do not, and large parts of it stay out of bounds, so a stay near the boundary is as close as most visitors get. Malakkappara is the other direction.

The border town lies 27 kilometres off on the Kerala side, with the checkpost near the Uppar Sholayar Dam on the way, and travellers heading for Ernakulam take that road rather than the one they came up. Anyone driving up from Pollachi, 64 km below, or from Coimbatore at 104 km, has already spent the day on 40 hairpin bends and will want the first night close to where the road ends. Few rooms sit beyond the estates.

About Valparai

Estates and forest share the hills.

What is Valparai known for?

Tea estates cover the worked land, 56 of them in all, while the Anamalai Tiger Reserve holds large forest areas that stay out of bounds to anyone arriving for the view. The climb itself is part of the reputation, since the road up from the foothills at Monkey Falls turns through 40 hairpin bends before it reaches the town. Football fills the rest.

State level competitions are played here each year.

What are the main landmarks in Valparai?

Monkey Falls marks the foot of the climb, 38 kilometres from Valparai, where the road out of the plains begins to rise. The Anamalai Tiger Reserve is the other name on the map, holding forest that the estates do not hold and that stays closed to visitors across much of its extent. The Uppar Sholayar Dam stands near the state border checkpost.

Temples draw visitors too. The route up from the foothills consists of 40 hairpin bends.

What is the history of Valparai?

Records give Valparai no founding date. Valparai grew around planted hills, and the 56 estates that still work the land account for most of the ground the town sits among. Private companies hold it.

Ownership is the fact that shapes everything else here, since large forest areas outside the estates stay out of bounds and the Anamalai Tiger Reserve accounts for much of what the companies do not have. Access was always the difficulty. A route of 40 hairpin bends climbs from the foothills at Monkey Falls, 38 kilometres away, and that ascent has defined the practical distance between Valparai and the plains ever since.

Pollachi lies 64 km off and Coimbatore 104 km, while Ernakulam is reachable at 110 km by way of Athirapalli, Vazhachal and Malakkarapa. The Kerala border sits close by, with the border town of Malakkappara 27 kilometres from Valparai and a checkpost near the Uppar Sholayar Dam. Football is popular here, and state level competitions are played in the hills each year.

Coimbatore district holds all of it, roughly 670 square kilometres of hill country under the Valparai name.

Where is Valparai?

The Anaimalai Hills carry it. Valparai sits just over a thousand metres above sea level on that range of the Western Ghats, with roughly 670 square kilometres of hill country attached to the town and the Anamalai Tiger Reserve taking up part of it. Monkey Falls marks the foot, 38 kilometres out.

The Kerala border runs close on the far side, where Malakkappara stands 27 kilometres from the town and the Uppar Sholayar Dam lies near the checkpost.

What is the climate of Valparai?

What matters at Valparai is the altitude. Valparai stands high enough on the Anaimalai Hills for the air to run cooler than the plains at Pollachi and Coimbatore, which is the whole point of a hill station in this range of the Western Ghats. The 56 estates work the same slopes.

Rain belongs to the tropical band the range sits in.

How do you get to Valparai?

Everything comes up the same road. The route from the foothills climbs through 40 hairpin bends, with the foot of it exactly at Monkey Falls, 38 kilometres from the town. Pollachi is 64 km below and Coimbatore 104 km, which makes the plains towns the usual starting point for the climb.

Kerala offers the other approach. Ernakulam is 110 km away by way of Athirapalli, Vazhachal and Malakkarapa, and the border town of Malakkappara sits 27 kilometres out with a checkpost near the Uppar Sholayar Dam.
