Where to stay in Khammam

The right area depends on your trip — here's what each neighbourhood is best for.

Khammam has the beds its district business needs. Rooms serve people arriving for the offices of Khammam district, for the colleges, or simply for a night's stop on a journey through Telangana rather than for anything the city sells as a sight. The city spreads wide.

Its built-up area runs to about 135 square kilometres, which makes the distance between a room and the district offices worth checking before booking anything. The Munneru marks the western limit. A room on that side puts the river close, while the centre keeps the municipal corporation, the colleges, and the through roads within easier reach of one another.

If you are travelling for work in Khammam district or Khammam mandal, the centre is the obvious choice, and the difference between one part of the city and another matters less here than the traffic on the day. Hyderabad, 193 kilometres west, holds far more choice. Suryapet at 61 kilometres and Warangal at 120 are closer than the capital, and Amaravathi lies 121 kilometres south across the Andhra Pradesh line.

Khammam mandal shares the city's name, and a stay anywhere inside it sits within the same administrative frame.

About Khammam

Khammam runs on work rather than sightseeing.

What is Khammam known for?

It heads Khammam district and Khammam mandal, ranks as the fourth largest city in Telangana, and carries a medical college, an engineering college, and an IT hub alongside the administration that fills its offices. The Munneru gives the city its western edge, and the road east from Hyderabad brings most of its visitors. Suryapet is the nearest measured neighbour.

What are the main landmarks in Khammam?

No single monument speaks for Khammam. The Munneru along the western side is the one natural feature the city can point to, and the medical college, the engineering college, and the IT hub are the later additions that give it weight in Telangana. Stambhadri is the older name behind Khammam, by way of kambham, and the British Raj wrote it as Khammam Mettu.

What is the history of Khammam?

The name has moved through several forms. Stambhadri came first, then kambham, and under the British Raj the place appeared as Khammam Mettu before the shorter form settled on the city that heads Khammam district. Each step kept the same root, and the modern spelling is the last of them rather than a break with what came before.

Administration followed the name. Khammam became the headquarters of both Khammam district and Khammam mandal, and on 19 October 2012 its civic body was upgraded to a municipal corporation. Growth followed the upgrade.

Road expansion, a medical college, an engineering college, and an IT hub have all been added to the city, which is counted the fourth largest in Telangana. The corporation still gives a small-town experience with modern amenities within easy reach. The Munneru has been the western boundary through all of it, and the river is older than any of the names the city has carried.

Hyderabad sits 193 kilometres west, and Amaravathi, capital of Andhra Pradesh, lies 121 kilometres south. Between those two capitals, Khammam holds its own weight rather than serving as a satellite of either, with Suryapet and Warangal closer than both.

Where is Khammam?

The Munneru runs along the western side. Khammam covers about 135 square kilometres in the tropical band of Telangana, 193 kilometres east of Hyderabad and 121 kilometres north of Amaravathi in Andhra Pradesh. The district takes its name.

Khammam district surrounds the city, Khammam mandal sits inside that, and Suryapet lies 61 kilometres off with Warangal at 120.

What is the climate of Khammam?

Heat, not rain, organises the working day in Khammam. The city lies in the tropical band, where the hot stretch runs long and the Munneru drops with it before the wet months bring the river back up. Khammam district shares the same pattern.

The wet months are the shorter half of the year in this band.

How do you get to Khammam?

Suryapet is the closest of the measured points, 61 kilometres out. Hyderabad, the state capital, lies 193 kilometres west, and most travellers reaching Khammam from outside Telangana come through it, with Warangal at 120 kilometres the other way in. Amaravathi is the southern approach.

The Andhra Pradesh capital sits 121 kilometres away, which makes Khammam one of the places a driver crossing between the two states passes on the way through.
