Where to stay in Secunderabad
Each area has its own feel; here's who each one suits.
Secunderabad Club and the parade ground mark the old cantonment core, and that is the ground most visitors end up sleeping near, since the Clock Tower streets, the churches and the railway headquarters all fall inside it. The zone is not large. Roughly 23 square kilometres separate one edge of Secunderabad from the other, and the Hussain Sagar closes the side facing Hyderabad, so a bed on this ground is never far from either city's business.
Rail arrivals have the simplest case of all, because the South Central Railway zone runs its headquarters here and the platforms leave the Basilica of Our Lady of the Assumption and the Centenary Baptist Church within an easy ride. Yapral is the other option. The neighbourhood is small, with many Indian Armed Forces officials living there, which gives its evenings a character quite unlike the streets that run past Secunderabad Club and the Clock Tower.
Anyone with business at Rashtrapati Nilayam or with the 54th Infantry Division of the Indian Army will find the Yapral side more practical than the club end, though the trade is distance from the restaurants the city is known for. Vikhar Manzil and Chiraan Fort Palace sit in the older layer. A stay planned around those two and the parade ground keeps the whole day inside Secunderabad rather than crossing the water to Hyderabad, which matters more than the short distance suggests, because the twin cities keep separate habits.
About Secunderabad
The railway runs the place.
What is Secunderabad known for?
Secunderabad is the headquarters of the South Central Railway zone, and the same city holds the 54th Infantry Division of the Indian Army along with Rashtrapati Nilayam, the winter office of the president of India. Its cantonment past shows in the street plan, with broader, better-kept roads and open spaces such as the parade ground set among the parks. Ulwul was the earlier name.
What are the main landmarks in Secunderabad?
Churches carry much of the list. The Basilica of Our Lady of the Assumption and the Centenary Baptist Church, whose Clock Tower names the streets around it, both date from the cantonment decades, and Secunderabad Club belongs to the same period of British building. Two older houses survive as well.
Vikhar Manzil and Chiraan Fort Palace stand for the layer that the Asaf Jahi dynasty left, and the parade ground remains open ground in the middle of it all.
What is the history of Secunderabad?
Ulwul was the earlier name. The British established a cantonment here in 1806 and named it for Mir Akbar Ali Khan Sikander Jah, Asaf Jah III, the Nizam of the Asaf Jahi dynasty whose princely state surrounded the new ground. Two histories then ran side by side.
Hyderabad continued as the capital of the Nizams' princely state while Secunderabad developed directly under British rule until 1948, which is why the twin cities share a map and very little in the way of custom, and why the two are still described separately. Rail changed the weight of the place. Secunderabad became the headquarters of the South Central Railway zone, and that role still accounts for much of what the city does for a living.
Government followed the army in 1956, when Rashtrapati Nilayam was fixed here as the winter office of the president of India, and the 54th Infantry Division of the Indian Army kept the cantonment's original purpose alive on the same ground. Buildings mark each stage. Chiraan Fort Palace and Vikhar Manzil belong to the Asaf Jahi layer, while Secunderabad Club, the Basilica of Our Lady of the Assumption and the Centenary Baptist Church with its Clock Tower are all cantonment work.
Administration came last, with Secunderabad becoming one of the six zones of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation.
Where is Secunderabad?
Water sets the boundary. Secunderabad lies north and east of the Hussain Sagar, and roughly 23 square kilometres of ground fall inside the zone that the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation administers as one of its six, with Telangana framing everything beyond that. Broad roads are the cantonment's clearest legacy.
The parade ground is the largest of the open spaces left behind, and parks take up much of what the street grid between Yapral and the Clock Tower does not.
What is the climate of Secunderabad?
The Hussain Sagar does more for the air here than any hill could, since Secunderabad sits in the tropical band north of the equator, where the year swings between wet and dry rather than between warm and cold. Heat is the default setting. Open ground such as the parade ground and the parks near the Clock Tower rewards an early start and punishes a middle-of-the-day one, which is why so much of what happens outdoors in Secunderabad happens before the sun is high.
How do you get to Secunderabad?
Trains define the approach. Secunderabad holds the headquarters of the South Central Railway zone, which puts the city on the network's own map rather than merely on Hyderabad's, and long-distance services arrive accordingly. Roads carry the rest of the traffic, crossing between the twin cities around the Hussain Sagar, and the broad, well-kept streets the cantonment left make this the easier half to drive.
The Clock Tower is the usual bearing.
