The settlement was a major grampanchayat before 1965, when it was upgraded to a municipality, the first step of the sequence that ended with Malkajgiri inside a metropolitan corporation.
Two changes landed in 2007. The municipality became a municipal corporation in its own right that year, and in the same year it was merged into the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation. District lines moved later.
Malkajgiri belonged to Ranga Reddy district until the re-organisation of 2016 redrew Telangana's districts, after which it fell inside the new Medchal-Malkajgiri district that took half its name from the town. The name also carries two smaller administrative units, Malkajgiri mandal, whose headquarters the town holds, and the Malkajgiri revenue division that the mandal sits inside. Older institutions sit close by.
