What is the history of Kāzerūn?
Kāzerūn stands in the shadow of a Sassanid city. Long ago the king Shapur the First built a great city called Bishapur in the valley nearby, laid out on a Roman plan by captives taken in his wars, and cut huge reliefs of his triumphs into the walls of the Chogan gorge. The old city fell to ruin.
After the Arab conquest Bishapur slowly emptied, but a town lived on at Kāzerūn on the caravan road below. The town grew as a stop on the road to the sea. Merchants and pilgrims passed through Kāzerūn between Shiraz and the Gulf ports, and it became known for its weaving and its caravanserais.
A great saint gave it fame. The Sufi sheikh Abu Ishaq was born and buried here, and his shrine drew followers whose lodges once spread across Asia. The old reliefs still watch the gorge.

Kāzerūn lies in a broad valley of Fars in southern Iran, between Shiraz and the Persian Gulf. The town sits among oak-clad hills on the old caravan road, beside the reedy Parishan lake, where the Zagros falls toward the hot southern plains. Wooded ridges rise around.

Kāzerūn has a warm, dry climate. Long, hot summers bake the valley, and mild winters bring some rain and rare frost, with green springs when the oak hills flower. Heat shimmers over the plain in summer.

How do you get to Kāzerūn?
Kāzerūn lies in western Fars, on the old road from Shiraz to Bushehr. Roads run to it down from Shiraz over the hills and on toward the Gulf coast, and a new route bypasses the town. Local roads reach the lake and the ruins.
