Multedo was a holiday place for centuries before industry arrived, and Liberty villini with coloured turrets still stand among the works. A stay here is a stay in working Genoa rather than the old city. Pegli lies just west across the Varenna.

What are the main landmarks in Multedo?
Villa Lomellini Rostan stands near the Varenna. The Lomellini built it in the sixteenth century, and Agostino Lomellini, doge from 1760 to 1762, restored it and had Emanuele Andrea Tagliafichi lay out an English garden in 1784 that became one of the most admired in Europe. Santi Nazario e Celso give the parish church its name.
The Fonderie di Multedo, designed by Adolfo Ravinetti for Ansaldo, worked from the 1910s until the 1980s.
What is the history of Multedo?
The name is recorded from the twelfth century, and comes from murtiòu, the local word for a myrtle wood. Legend has the saints Nazario and Celso landing here in Nero's time to begin the evangelisation of Liguria. The first houses rose on the promontory closing the gulf of Sestri, along the medieval road to the riviera villages that is still called the via Antica Romana.
Multedo belonged to the pieve of Prà in the Middle Ages, then alternately to Pegli and Sestri Ponente, and became an autonomous comune at the end of the eighteenth century under the Ligurian Republic. Pegli annexed it in 1875.

Multedo sits on the coast west of Genoa, between Sestri Ponente and Pegli, with the Varenna torrent marking the boundary towards Pegli. It is an urban unit of Municipio VII Ponente. Murta in Bolzaneto shares the root.
