What are the main landmarks in Gardolo?
Four buildings stand out in Gardolo. Castello di Gardolo is the single secular entry on that list, and the other three, the Visitation of Mary church, Saint Anne church and Saint Francis church, are all places of worship standing inside Gardolo's own bounds. Trento holds the cathedral and the museums.
The castle has a long paper trail: in 1184 Wasengrinus de Gardule ceded his half of the castrum de Gardule to the Bishop of Trento.
What is the history of Gardolo?
Gardolo's name is on record from 1174, when Rodulfus Muso of Gardule gave a vineyard to the Augustinian convent of San Michele all'Adige, and its castle from 1184. The village became a curacy in 1722, Napoleon stayed here in 1796, and its own community administration ended in 1807 under the Napoleonic reforms. Castello di Gardolo and three parish churches are the fixed points that remain. Villazzano is the other in the pair.
