The map does the deciding here. Satsumasendai runs to nearly seven hundred square kilometres, so a bed near the Sendai Space Museum leaves Imuta-ike a long way off, and a bed out by the water reverses the problem exactly. Two names, two kinds of stay.
The Sendai half is the museum half, with the Sendai Magokoro Museum of Literature and Togo's Bunya-bushi ningyo joruri puppet theater falling within the same errand. The 2004 merger left one city with two centres of gravity, and the choice of where to sleep still follows the older division rather more closely than it follows the newer name. Satsuma is the older word.
Kiyoshiki Castle and the Satsuma Kokubun-ji Remains anchor that side, and a room chosen for them suits anyone whose interest is what stood on this ground before the merger rather than what has been built since. Imuta-ike is different again. Out there the municipality thins to open country, and the Fujikawa shrine Garyubai Tree is the kind of landmark that a single named tree can be.
Beds thin out with the country, and the far corners of a municipality this size are not where the choice of rooms is wide. Kagoshima Prefecture surrounds all of it. The errand decides the bed, not the reverse.

What is the history of Satsumasendai?
The paperwork is the newest thing here. Satsumasendai was created in 2004, and the merger did what mergers do, taking two names that had meant different things and setting them over one stretch of Kagoshima Prefecture. Both halves left visible marks.
The Satsuma Kokubun-ji Remains and Kiyoshiki Castle both predate the modern city by a long way, and neither owes anything to the line that now encloses them. What the merger enclosed was already dense with older claims: shrine ground at Fujikawa, castle ground at Kiyoshiki, and the temple remains that still carry the Satsuma name. Names outlast administrations.
Culture kept its own record. Togo's Bunya-bushi ningyo joruri puppet theater preserves a puppet form under a name the city still uses, and the Sendai Magokoro Museum of Literature gathers the written side of the same inheritance. The Sendai Space Museum looks the other way entirely.
Imuta-ike and the Fujikawa shrine Garyubai Tree are older still, marking ground that was worth naming long before anyone thought to set Satsuma beside Sendai on a signpost. Three institutions and one tree carry most of the memory. The rest of it is held in a city of Kagoshima Prefecture that only acquired its present shape in 2004.

Rain is the season that matters. Satsumasendai lies in the subtropical belt, which lengthens the humid part of the year and shortens the cold part until winter reads as an interruption rather than as a season. Imuta-ike sees the same weather as the town.
Anyone timing a visit to the Fujikawa shrine Garyubai Tree is timing it against rain, not against frost.
