Kōhoku-ku, Yokohama — Area Guide & Where to Stay

Kōhoku-ku is a ward of Yokohama centred on Shin-Yokohama, the transit quarter behind the port city's western hills.

About Kōhoku-ku

Where to stay in Kōhoku-ku

Each area has its own feel; here's who each one suits.

Most rooms cluster in Shin-Yokohama, the ward's business and arrival quarter. Stay near the interchange. Beds around Shin-Yokohama put the Shin-Yokohama Raumen Museum and the wider network of Yokohama within a short ride, while the quieter streets around Komaoka and its burial-mound parks suit travellers who would rather sleep away from the crowds and reach the centre only when they choose to.

About Kōhoku-ku

What are the main landmarks in Kōhoku-ku?

The ward carries markers from two very different ages. In Shin-Yokohama, the Shin-Yokohama Raumen Museum gathers regional ramen styles under one roof and draws day-trippers off the arriving trains. Far older ground survives to the west, where the Komaoka Hyōtan-yama Kofun and the burial mounds around Komaoka record settlement here long before the port existed, while Yokohama Rapport serves the ward as a civic and community hall.

What is the history of Kōhoku-ku?

People settled this ground early. The burial mounds and shell heaps scattered across Komaoka and the surrounding hills show occupation of the area long before Yokohama grew into a port, and the Komaoka Hyōtan-yama Kofun is one marker of that ancient layer. The ward took its present shape as Yokohama expanded inland, folding the farmland behind the western hills into the city and turning the district around Shin-Yokohama from fields into the arrival quarter it is now.

Where is Kōhoku-ku?

Kōhoku-ku spreads over low hills and valley floors behind the western edge of Yokohama, its ground climbing away from the built-up quarter at Shin-Yokohama toward the greener slopes around Komaoka.
